THICK is a site-specific dance created for Tacoma’s Tollefson Plaza by Ecuadorian-American choreographer Carla Barragan and BQdanza members. Commissioned by Spaceworks in Tacoma, it was performed again during Arts Crush to celebrate Tacoma Art Museum's 75th anniversary, and the opening of Mighty Tacoma on Oct 21 , 2010. The dancers reaction to the BP Oil Spill environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico mourns the loss of and also celebrates the beauty and grace of birds, sea creatures, micro-organisms and other non-human victims of the region.  Dancers rotated from one area of the plaza to another.  A soundscape that included a poem by spoken-word artist Luke Smiraldo was softly heard on and off, mixed with traffic and street noise. This work can be adapted to any outdoor area with water fountains or pools.
